"Celebrating Earth Day with Sea, Sun and Seals"
On Saturday, April 24th Save the Harbor/Save the Bay took 500 area kids, families and friends out on Boston Harbor to look for seals and porpoises on Save the Harbor/Save the Bay’s annual free “Marine Mammal Safari” trips. With the help of Massachusetts Bay Lines and a day of beautiful weather, all 500 voyagers had fun looking for the sea creatures and learning more about the history of Boston Harbor.
This year our annual safari cruises were in higher demand than ever, as both free cruises quickly “sold out.” Save the Harbor was delighted to welcome groups and families from neighborhoods across the city and the region for this year’s “seal spotting.”
“We saw a few seals in the distance, behind Little Calf Island, but the water was too shallow to get the boat really close enough to see them,” said Save the Harbor/Save the Bay’s spokesman Bruce Berman. “But it’s great to see that they are out in the harbor, and everyone had fun looking for them. We were also lucky to see a number of cormorants, eiders and other sea birds out on the water.”
Boston is a winter and spring home to harbor seals and harbor porpoises that return each year to feed on herring and other bait fish in the cleaner waters of Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay.
“We lucked out with great weather out on Boston Harbor this past weekend,” said PJ McCann, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay’s Policy and Program Coordinator. “It was great to see families and groups from all over the area enjoy scouring the coast line for marine mammals.”
